Enhancing People-to-People Connectivity to Address Non-traditional Security Challenges in the Mekong Region

The project aims to promote the integration of cooperation at the sub-regional level to deal with transnational crime in the Thai-Lao and Thai-Cambodia border areas efficiently and comprehensively, especially the problem of human trafficking, smuggling drugs across borders and illegal migration.

Short-term: To strengthen the relation between people to people and local officers in the bordering area and raise awareness to empower local authorities in the Mekong region, particularly in Thailand, Lao PDR, and Cambodia, to combat non-traditional security challenges like humar trafficking, drug smuggling, and illegal migration.

Achievements

  • 1.Promoted public engagement by establishing the “NTS-Mekong Watch Coordination Center – NTS-MWCC” in 44 border districts between Thailand and Laos and Thailand and Cambodia.
  • 2.Launching the www.NTS-Mekong.com website, providing another significant channel for citizens in all 44 districts to online reporting incidents related to non-traditional security challenges.
  • 3.Completed workshop on aMekong Linkage in Lao PDR and Cambodia attended by the leaders and officials from bordering districts for collaborative development in reducing NTS incidents as well as fostering mutual understanding of laws and regulations in the border areas and promoting fair law enforcement to create a unified and secure living environment.
